Types of sutures: Wound Closure for Medical and Surgical Procedures

Sep. 09, 2021

Surgical sutures are used to hold body tissues together after surgery or injury. There are two types of sutures, absorbable and non-absorbable. Over time, absorbable sutures break down naturally in the body, while non-absorbable sutures are removed after a period of time.
LOOKMED will describe the different types of sutures, materials, and other useful information.

Types of absorbable sutures

Absorbable surgical sutures are usually used in the internal tissues of the body and are absorbed by the body. Some of the different suture materials used include polyglycolic acid, enteric sutures, polylactic acid, caprolactone, etc.

1,Chromic intestinal sutures

The first suture category is chromic intestinal sutures, made from the submucosal fibrous layer of sheep intestine or the plasma membrane layer of beef. The tissue used is mainly collagen and is chemically treated. Because of the collagen used, it has excellent tensile strength.
The chromium salt solution helps to slow down the absorption by the body. Chromium intestinal sutures are most commonly used in ophthalmology, obstetrics/gynecology, orthopedics, gastrointestinal surgery and general closure.

2,Common intestinal sutures

is made primarily of collagen derived from the submucosal fibrous layer of sheep intestine or the plasma membrane layer of bovine intestine. This connective tissue is first purified. Plain intestinal sutures are typically used for ophthalmic surgery rather than neurological or cardiovascular surgery.
Normal intestinal sutures are absorbed by the body through an enzymatic process. This process is similar to protein digestion in animals.

3,Polyglycolic acid sutures

Also known as PGA sutures, polyglycolic acid sutures have greater tensile strength and predictable absorption than intestinal sutures.
Polyglycolic acid sutures have a slower absorption time. This process is called hydrolysis. Polyglycolic acid sutures are best suited for ophthalmic surgery and not for neurological or cardiovascular surgery.

Types of non-absorbable sutures

Non-absorbable sutures are made of synthetic polyester, polypropylene, nylon or special silk. These sutures are used for wound closure and the patient will return after a period of time to remove the sutures.

1,Nylon sutures

Also known as polyamide sutures, nylon sutures are monofilament and have excellent knot security. These non-absorbable sutures are soft and smooth. Nylon sutures have a low risk of infection and do not exhibit tissue adhesion, making them ideal for skin closure. These sutures are also made of polymers.

2,Polypropylene sutures

Polypropylene sutures are non-absorbable monofilaments. These sutures are made from isotropic crystalline stereoisomers of polypropylene, synthetic linear polyolefins. Polypropylene sutures have high tensile strength, low risk of infection, and minimal tissue reaction.
Polypropylene sutures are well suited for general soft tissue suturing, including ophthalmic, cardiovascular and neurosurgical procedures.

3,Silk sutures

Silk sutures are non-absorbable and treated with silicone for strength and smoothness. Silk sutures are made black with FDA-approved dyes. They are braided, coated and used primarily as ligature threads. Filament sutures are not used for urinary tract and biliary procedures. There are some reactions in the tissue area.

This is a brief introduction. Now we use disposable curved cutter stapler to cut and suture simultaneously, that is much more convenient. Please contact us to get more about surgery and endoscope equpiment.
