Linear stapler Description
The laparoscopic linear stapler is a very useful tissue approximation device. A variety of staple sizes and heights can be used so that the surgeon can select staples that provide proper in vivo balance/tissue juxtaposition without significant ischaemia or tissue destruction. The dimensions of the common staple compartments used to accommodate different tissue thicknesses for proper tissue management are shown below. The device is available with two staggered rows of titanium staples in sizes 60 mm, 160 mm and 90 mm.

Linear stapler use
No single stapler can address the wide range of tissue management problems that surgeons face on a daily basis. The current review focuses on bariatric, thoracic and colorectal studies. The results suggest that different types of tissue have different thicknesses and biomechanical properties and may require the use of sutures of different heights or the use of different types of sutures (linear, curved and circular) to construct stable anastomoses. Each tissue type has its own challenges and the pathology of the tissue must also be considered.
To close internal organs prior to transection.
For closing common openings or enterotomies after the creation of anastomoses
To perform side-to-side or functional end-to-end anastomoses.
Lung biopsy or wedge resection and bronchial administration and closure.
Pulmonary vessels before they split.
Excision of solid organs such as the liver or pancreas.
