How Did Injection Needle Appear and Evolve?

Dec. 02, 2021

In the history of human medical treatment to save lives, medication has been an effective means to help the body fight disease. But oral drugs take a long time to take effect, after the liver processing before entering the bloodstream. So long ago, mankind began to search for a device that would deliver drugs directly into the body without taking them orally. After countless failures and terrible infections, the device they were looking for, the injection needle, was born.

How it works

The working principle of the syringe is not complicated. By pushing and pulling the piston rod, which is tightly embedded in the injection tube, the discharge hole at the front of the syringe tube discharges or inhales liquid or gas. When the piston rod is lifted, the liquid or gas is drawn into the syringe, and when the rod is pushed in, the liquid or gas is squeezed out, a process known as "injection. In order to guide the fluid in and out of the syringe barrel, the open end of the syringe is usually equipped with a hypodermic needle, nozzle or tube. The English word "syringe" is derived from the Greek word meaning "tube", the earliest syringe is only a plunger tube without a needle.

Development process

In the 9th century A.D., surgeons in Iraq invented a hollow glass tube syringe to remove cataracts from patients' eyes by suction. This seemingly horrific treatment was continued and was still used in Europe until the 13th century A.D. The 17th century English scientist Christopher Raine experimented on dogs with hollow goose feather tubes attached to animal bladders, injecting them with opium, alcohol and other drugs for observation, concluding that internal injection was as effective as, if not more effective than, oral administration. This daring attempt saved some lives, but resulted in more fatal complications due to infection. By the early 19th century, pharmaceutical technology was advancing rapidly and doctors began to experiment further, and the syringe was born. The syringe was graduated and the needle was made more delicate. This improvement led to the widespread use of syringes and a leap in the history of medicine.
The 1950s saw another spring in syringe development. The rapid development of the plastics industry injected a new element into syringe production. Disposable plastic syringes not only adhered to the advantages of traditional glass syringes of transparency and inertness, but also had the characteristics of not easy to damage, easy to transport, low cost and easy to recycle.

Precision infusion sets

Medical personnel check the sterilization expiration date of the disposable infusion set and the package for air leakage and other abnormalities before use, remove the infusion set, infuse the cone connector part of the infusion bottle, hang the infusion bottle on the infusion rod, exhaust until the liquid flows to the lower end of the infusion tube, close the regulator, then stab the intravenous needle into the sterilized vein, fix it, untie the tourniquet and adjust the flow rate.

It is reported that the 2010 edition of the Chinese Pharmacopoeia stipulates that the minimum particle control standard for infusion sets is 10 micron particles and the maximum is 25 micron particles. Larger insoluble particles cause localized vascular blockage or inadequate blood supply or tissue hypoxia, phlebitis, edema, granulomas and other infusion reactions. In pediatrics, infants and children have finer than normal blood vessels and lower autoimmune function, and the hazards and reactions of particles are more pronounced and severe for them. Second, elderly patients, tumor patients, and cardiovascular patients are more severely affected by particulates than normal patients because they are usually accompanied by lesions such as vascular sclerosis, wall thickening, and lumen narrowing.
Because of these special essentials, and the differences in disease, doctors sometimes have to use single-use precision infusion sets. This is related to the medication so that the treatment is more beneficial.
