Endoscope Instrument: History, Classification, And Future

Jul. 28, 2021

Compared with traditional surgery, minimally invasive surgery has the advantages of less trauma, faster recovery and less patient pain. Minimally invasive endoscopic medical devices serve as the "eyes" of the surgeon and can effectively help the surgeon "see" the lesion. With the popularity of minimally invasive surgery worldwide, endoscope instrument has entered a period of rapid development.

History of endoscopy

The history of medical endoscopy has more than 200 years, its development has gone through four stages: hard endoscope, semi-flexible endoscope, fiberoptic endoscope and electronic endoscope.

1806, BOZZini in Frankfurt, Germany, manufactured an internal instrument for the bladder and rectum, which was the first prototype of hard endoscope. 1932, Schindler and Wolf collaborated to develop a true semi-flexible endoscope that ushered in a new era of gastroscopy. in 1957, Hirschowitz and his research and development team developed the world's first fiber-optic endoscope for examining the stomach and duodenum. In 1983, Welch Allyn successfully developed a CCD micro image sensor and the first electronic endoscope was born. With the prosperity and development of minimally invasive surgery, new endoscopic products continue to innovate.

Endoscope instrument classification

Endoscope has been widely used in the treatment of different clinical departments and different diseases. It is mainly divided into flexible tube endoscope (referred to as flexible mirror) and hard tube endoscope (referred to as hard mirror).

1,Rigid endoscope

Rigid scopes can be divided into categories such as laparoscopy, thoracoscopy and hysteroscopy. Various types of rigid scopes are used together with supporting equipment to complete the diagnosis and treatment of various types of diseases. Hard lens is a prismatic optical system, the biggest advantage is clear imaging, can be equipped with multiple working channels, choose multiple angles.

2,Soft endoscope

Soft endoscope is mainly through the natural cavity of the human body to complete the examination, such as gastroscopy, enteroscopy, laryngoscopy, bronchoscopy, etc. The optical system of the soft endoscope is fiber optic optical system. Surgeons can manipulate it to change the direction and expand the scope of application, but the imaging effect is not as good as that of a rigid mirror. The soft lens has the advantages of timely diagnosis and treatment, low risk, low surgical trauma, and fast postoperative recovery.

"Consumables" for endoscope instrument

Endoscope is a precision optical instrument, both hard and soft mirrors need to use special sealing technology to achieve, the metal material fixation and sealing requirements are very high. This tests the endoscope manufacturer's manufacturing process.

At the same time, the traditional endoscope due to its complex structure, so if the disinfection and cleaning is not complete, it is easy to cause cross-infection between patients, so disposable endoscope in the future will be a major trend in the development of endoscopy.

Conclusion

The use of disposable endoscopes can reduce the risk of cross-infection among patients and can greatly improve the efficiency of minimally invasive surgery. With the continuous upgrading of technology and improvement of medical systems, the global market demand for endoscopes will further expand in the future and develop in the direction of miniaturization and consumption.
